Tutors are usually transition year students in secondary schools or undergraduates in university/3rd level colleges who volunteer to share their digital skills. So far 5,000+ Tutors have participated in 121digital. A frequent comment when they complete their feedback questionnaire on the final day is "... 121digital is the best thing I did this year ..."

Tutors are paired with their Learner at the first lesson and work with the same Learner throughout the course. They get to know their Learner and how he/she thinks, understands, learns and remembers. By working with one adult over the duration of the course the Tutor gets a window into how adults live and what makes them tick.

Support for Tutors :

121digital
provides training for the Tutors before they meet their Learner.
  • During each lesson Tutors are supported by a roving Tutor - the 'Rover' will support each Tutor when a Learner asks a question which a Tutor is not confident to answer........ so, Tutors also learn, too ! Many say, "I learned so much while tutoring my Learner.
  • Professionally written Tutor Guide documentation is provided to guide and support Tutors in their role.
  • Facilitators (who participate in several courses over months or years) delegate to the Tutors/Rover and are on hand throughout to provide support by engaging with each Tutor and Learner pair to give guidance and support.

Digital skill ? - the Tutors have it and Learners want it - Digital skill is the glue that brings the Tutors and Learners together .... but then, they discover that they have much more, in common .... past-times, interests, hobbies, sport, etc.

It's unique because one Tutor teaches one Learner - always.

On the last day of the course, when held in a school, 121digital invites each Learner to share a skill(s) or to tell a true short story, about their own life, dating from when they were the age of the Tutor. This is optional but encouraged.
It is cathartic for the Learner. This is unique - it captures the wisdom of the Learner for the sole benefit of the Tutor and makes the 121digital course a true 'teaching & learning across the generations' experience to be remembered
.

121digital is a Gaisce approved 'Community Engagement' opportunity - even school-time hours worked in 121digital qualify for the Community Engagement part of your award.
ALL Tutors (not only Gaisce applicants) are recommended to add their 121digital experience to their CV.
Universities and colleges award academic points to students for 121digital volunteering hours worked in the local community.
The 121digital experience is a valuable addition to any CV - employers highly value volunteering experience on a CV especially when the applicant is new to the workforce.
Tutors:
Tutors deliver one-to-one training to their Learner. Up to 15 to 20 Tutors are trained in tutoring skills before they are paired with their Learner for the duration of the course. Tutors are supported by the Facilitator(s) and Rover at each lesson.

Rover :
One volunteer Tutor is invited to fill the Rover role. He/she is not assigned their own individual Learner. Their role is to work with all the Tutor/Learner pairs addressing the more complex questions raised by Learners. This gives additional support to any Tutor and means that a higher level of digital tutoring skill is available to every Learner. This practice means that each Tutor also has the opportunity to learn new skills during their 121digital course.
